Fair Housing

The rights of individuals within the protected classes of race, sex, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, veteran status, sexual orientation, age, marital status, familial status, disability, source of income, gender identity, gender expression, military discharge status, housing status or order of protection status in the purchasing, leasing, securing a loan, renting or occupying housing or other real estate are protected under Chapter 13 of the Village Code.

Filing Complaints

Any person otherwise qualified who is denied or discriminated against in these processes should contact the Community Relations Department for more information, conciliation or to file a formal, written complaint. Individuals also may file written, formal complaints with the Cook County Human Rights Commission or Illinois Department of Human Rights.

Mandatory Management Seminar

The Village also provides a mandatory annual landlord management seminar to all owners or managers of rental housing in Oak Park. Available in-person and online, the seminar curriculum covers a broad array of topics, including protections and responsibilities under local, state and federal law. Village Staff, Police, experts and representatives of local housing program partners are on-hand at the seminars to introduce themselves, answer questions and describe all of the resources available to landlords in Oak Park.
